What makes silver jewellery tarnish and how do you get rid of it?
That nasty black colour is caused by sulphur in the atmosphere reacting with the silver. We've heard of lots of ways to clean sterling silver including soaking your silver in lemonade; gently rubbing your silver jewellery with a toothbrush and toothpaste; using vinegar and placing your jewellery in denture water - the bubbles apparently lift the dirt away!
However, all you need to do is to gently clean your silver jewellery with very mild soap and water and rinse well. And then pat dry thoroughly with a lint free soft cloth like felt. Don't use a paper towel as the fibres can scratch the silver.
If your silver jewellery is only slightly tarnished, then you only need to buff your silver jewellery with a lint free soft cloth like felt to renew its brightness.
